The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of alcohol consumption and to examine the association between alcohol consumption and self-reported risk behaviors among primary and secondary school students in Uganda. We analyzed data from 1,361 adolescents enrolled in two randomized trials of a secondary-school-based HIV prevention intervention. Students completed survey questionnaires at baseline (2012) and immediately following intervention delivery (2014). In all, 5.5% of students reported that they drank alcohol, and 4.1% reported having sex. Alcohol use was associated with condomless sex, which was common among students who drank alcohol (odds ratio [OR]: 2.31; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.55-3.43) and among those with higher levels of alcohol consumption (OR: 3.41; 95% CI: 1.69-6.86). High school students who reported that they had not drunk alcohol at baseline were significantly less likely to report having sex in 2014 (OR: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.09-0.79). Our results suggest that abstinence-only policies should be more broadly implemented. Efforts should also be made to ensure access to HIV prevention services for youth who drink.Newsletter Sign-Up
